Ernie Chan: July 27, 1940–May 16, 2012
Yesterday we lost another Filipino comic book master illustrator and ink artist only one week after Tony Dezuniga – Ernie Chan. Ernie was a favorite inker of mine as a young fan. I only saw a couple of covers of his early DC Batman work, but it was his less than one year run on the Incredible Hulk inking over the pencils of Sal Buscema where he became a hero to me.
Tony DeZuniga was one of the true trailblazers of the comic book world. He wasn’t the first foreign artist to work in the American market, but he became one of the most famous, and by virtue of sheer talent opened the door for an entire generation of Filipino artists to follow. Along the way he co-created one of the more unique Western characters to grace a mainstream comic book – Jonah Hex – and left his mark both as a penciller and inker of repute.
CONGRATULATIONS to the 3rd award recipient of the Dave Simons Inkwell Memorial Scholarship Fund at the Joe Kubert School, as presented Friday May 4 by Joe Kubert himself, Kristoffer Sorensen! The Inkwell Awards wish him much luck and success in his remaining academic studies and certain career.

As reported today at First Comics News the Inkwell Awards’ fifth season is well under way with their first show stop in Pittsburgh next week and the next two new Ms. Inkwell models revealed and the dates for this year’s voting period established for next month!

I’m teaching four, 2 hour classes on inking 3/28, 4/4, 4/18 & 4/25.
This is a hands-on inking course designed for those new to comic book inking as well as for those who want to expand their basic inking skills. While primarily brush-orientated, you will also be working with crow quill pens and other tools both rational and irrational. You will not only learn inking techniques but get an understanding of the basic framework behind inking. You will know what you need to do on a page and why.
