20140502_141733_resizedsmall Representing the Inkwell Awards, committee member Erick Korpi appeared at the Kubert School for their annual scholarship awards ceremony which took place on Friday May 2 to personally hand the 2014 Dave Simons Inkwell Memorial Scholarship Award of $1000 to this year’s student recipient Aysegul Sinav. Originally from Turkey, she is the fifth award recipient since the scholarship was created by the Inkwell Awards in 2010 following the passing of artist and committee member Dave Simons in 2009.  Erick spoke briefly before presenting the financial award to Aysegul alongside instructors and VPs Adam and Andy Kubert.  Dave’s sister Bette Simons will have a statement to be read for her at the Inkwell Awards live awards ceremony at Heroes Con June 21st.  For more info about Dave Simons or the previous Kubert School student recipients from the last four years you can find that here(more…)

Inkwell Awards ambassador J. David Spurlock (in the photo to the right of Dick) posted today on his Facebook wall the following news:

Rest In Peace Dick Ayers. There have never been sweeter people than Dick and his wife Lindy. Here is a photo from one of my recent visits in which Dick and I collaborated on a few recreations of early, Marvel covers by the team of Kirby and Ayers. Dick had been suffering the last year, from complications of Parkinsons disease. Richard “Dick” Ayers (born April 28, 1924) is an American comic book artist and cartoonist best known for his work as one of Jack Kirby’s inkers during the late-1950s and 1960s period known as the Silver Age of Comics, including on some of the earliest issues of Marvel Comics’ The Fantastic Four.
